What is the Velo-City Challenge??
A Small Introduction
The Velo-City Challenge is a project which hopes to encourage whole families to use bicycles in part of their everyday lives. Our job is to try and promote this idea in our school, other local schools and our community. |

More Detail
Our Geography teacher Mrs. Boal introduced this project to us when we were in second year. The project was through Geography or Enivomental Studies as it is now known.
Stage 1
For the first part of the stage we were asked to produce a short report which was to be no more than a double-sided piece of A4 paper. On this sheet we had to describe what we think could be done to encourage more people to cycle. Our entry included our thoughts on the positive effects cycling has on health and the enviroment or ozone layer. We however felt that security was a major problem in trying to promote cycling as many bikes, including my own mountain bike only last month, have been stolen only this year. We designed our arguments in a sort of leaflet style layout with both sides used.
Success
Thankfully the entry we described above was a winning one. As our prize we recieved a " specially assembled cycle maintenance tool set", plus an air pump and maintenance book. More importantly however we were invited to participate in Stage Two which is described below.
Stage 2
Stage 2 is not a competetion but a chance to try and put some of our ideas into practise. We were given more time in this stage and our work started in August 2000 and is still on-going at the moment.
The Velo-City Challenge is supported by the Royal Bank of Scotland who helped fund the competetion. Throughout the Year there have been many orgainised activites which can be viewed in more detail in the other pages of the site. we have now to prepare a report on our findings for the next stage.
Stage 3
This is the best part ( or depending how you look at it the worst stage) of the challenge. We will attend a HUGE conference which will include hundreds of cycling specialists throughout the country. The conference will be held in Scotland in September of this year. At this conference we have to deliver a small talk ( in front of hundreds and hunbdreds of foriegn and homebase experts ) on our findings throughout the challenge.
